The End of Empire IV

The End of Empire IV

By the end of the 4th century, most of the troops in Britain would have been recruited locally. As the Roman state concentrated on preventing invasion, it stopped paying army salaries and controlling Britain. When the Germanic Vandals invaded Gaul in AD 406-7, Britain was very much left to its own devices. In AD 410, the British people wrote to emperor Honorius asking for help to defend the country against invading Saxons. He told them to take precautions on their own behalf.
