Roman remains have been found in Winchester including streets and houses, building materials, pieces of pottery, jewellery and coins. Some of the coins have the heads of Roman emperors on them, just like modern coins have the queen's head. So, it's possible to be very accurate about when the coins were minted and if a coin is found underneath a floor or wall it helps to date that building.
