Writings from Roman authors describe the movement of the Ninth Legion in Britain and tile-stamps have been found in York.

There are inscriptions that mention the legion and the town's legal status.

Archaeologists have found streets and buildings, and some parts of the Roman wall survive to this day (although many have later, medieval, modifications).
