Some of York Museum's most outstanding finds from Roman York show what an important centre it was within Britain, and how it was a cosmopolitan and multiracial place.

Archaeologists have examined inscriptions, objects left behind (like cooking pots) and skeletons. They show that people came to York from as far away as Gaul, Italy and, possibly, Egypt.

Archaeologists from Reading University examined 68 skeletons from York and they suggest that up to 20 per cent of the population were not originally from York.
