Ancient texts describe the life of Septimius Severus, for example, the Historia Augusta, written during the last years of the Roman Empire, where he is described as a 'native of Africa'. He was born in Leptis in Phoenicia. We also learn that 'his voice was clear, but retained an African accent even to his old age.' He 'died at Eboracum in Britain'. Eboracum is modern-day York.
